Elisabeth Stock is a PhD candidate and research assistant at the Institute for Biomedical Ethics at the University of Basel (IBMB). She is working on the project “Decision Making in Times of Scarce Resources: A Mixed-Method Study,” funded by the Käthe Zingg-Schwichtenberg Fund of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences. The project focuses on pre-hospital triage decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a particular emphasis on older adults.
Her academic profile includes a six-month Visiting Scholar position in 2025 at NYU Langone Health’s Division of Medical Ethics and The Hastings Center for Bioethics in the United States.
Background/Expertise:
She has 10 years of experience as a clinical nutritionist in various medical fields, such as geriatrics, oncology, and palliative care. After accumulating practical experience on bioethical issues in clinical work, she further professionalized in these topics by obtaining a Master's degree in “Applied Ethics” at the University of Graz, Austria, and served as a member of a clinical ethics committee.
Her research expertise includes ethics in geriatric care, as well as qualitative and quantitative methods. Additionally, she has a strong interest in ethical issues related to the treatment of obesity, particularly concerning bariatric surgery and pharmacological therapies.
Awards:
Her bachelor's thesis, “Practices to Achieve a Short-Term Weight Reduction Prior to Competition in Taekwondo,” was awarded the prestigious Kellogg Barber Award for Excellence for the best poster presented at the 6th DIETS-EFAD Conference in Portorož, Slovenia.
