The Basel photographer Peter Schulthess accidentally discovered over 20 years ago the world behind bars photographically, with its own architecture, processes, and peculiarities. He began to fundamentally engage with the topic of penitentiary systems, and quickly it developed its own momentum: several photo books, exhibitions, and specialized publications followed.

His images regularly appear, for example, in the #prison-info of the Federal Office of Justice.
