CV of Gemma María García Calderó
Gemma García Calderó is a PhD student at the Institute for Biomedical Ethics (IBMB) from the University of Basel. She works on the topic of loneliness and social isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic, inside the project "INCLUDE" which is part of the SNF NRP-80 "Covid-19 in Society". Her research embraces a variety of methods: qualitative research, systematic reviews and theoretical analysis. In her PhD thesis she strives to bring together theoretical ethical reflection with empirical data, in order to build context-specific recommendations.
She graduated in Pharmacy in 2021 at the University of Barcelona, Spain, with a Bachelor's thesis on the access to financed-drugs in Spain and pharmaceutical poverty. She completed a Master's Degree in Bioethics and Law (2021-2023) at the University of Barcelona, writing a master thesis about the ethical implications of prescribing antidepressants and benzodiazepines in cases of non-pathological emotional distress. Thanks to the Stehr-Boldt Fellowship she carried out a 3-month research stay at the Institute for Biomedical Ethics (IBME) from the University of Zürich to develop part of her master thesis. Moreover, she has completed 2 years of the Philosophy Bachelor's degree.
Her research interests are normative ethics and meta-ethics, and the integration of ethics in healthcare research and decisions.
